Wavefront manipulation in imaging: when blurry is better

Abstract

Traditional imaging system design places a priority on correcting the exit pupil wavefront to produce a sharp image at the plane of detection. This paper discusses applications where system performance is improved by manipulating the wavefront to differ from a converging spherical wave.
