Spectrum synthesis for pulse waveform control by means of acousto-optics

Abstract

Pulse shaping of femtosecond pulses is intended by spectrum synthesis in the optical frequency domain. We report theoretical and experimental investigation of the possibilities of phase sensitive spectrum manipulation through acousto-optic (Bragg) gratings. Two different interaction configurations have been used to produce multi-peak optical spectra from wide bandwidth optical sources, such as ultrashort laser pulses, dye lasers and halogen white light sources. The corresponding temporal waveforms are pulse trains with peak distances and amplitudes controlled through the applied acoustic frequencies, amplitudes and phases.
