Abstract

Optical tweezers are becoming a rapidly established technique in micromanipulation of particles, especially combined with high magnification optical microscopy. There are extensive applications in manipulation and force measurement in colloidal science where the colloidal particles are directly trapped, and in biological schemes where the species of interest is attached to micron sized transparent beads to facilitate trapping. In such systems the optical trap is formed by tightly focusing a medium powered visible or near infrared laser beam using a high numerical aperture microscope objective.
