Abstract

We experimentally studied triangular-lattice photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) fabricated on SOI substrates using a phase-sensitive lock-in technique. The PCWs (Fig. 1) were designed and fabricated to operate at frequencies of interest for telecommunications applications (λ ~ 1550 nm). In addition to improving the signal-to-noise ratio for transmission measurements, the lock-in amplifier allowed us to monitor the phase behavior of the waveguides. Two ridge waveguides were attached to the input and output of each PCW, and both the amplitude and phase of the transmitted signals were measured. For comparison, we repeat these measurements for ridge waveguides with no PCW and having the same length.
