Abstract

In view of the current controversy relating to the optimum design of compact disks, we investigate the phase behavior of focused electromagnetic beams in the neighborhood of the geometrical focus. The analysis indicates that the spacing of the co-phasal surfaces of the electric field depends strongly on numerical aperture.
