Abstract
We consider propagation of short optical pulses in a medium of classical oscillators with quadratic or cubic nonlinearities and find analytical solutions in form of localized polaritons. We demonstrate that different energy emission and absorption mechanisms combined with action of the resonant nonlinearity can lead to reduction of the soliton group velocity, having zero as a theoretical limit. We discuss applications of our results for ultrafast optics in nonlinear plasmonic materials, such as dielectrics hosting metal nano-particles.
