LED Illumination with a Condensing Sphere

Abstract

A novel compact and efficient illumination system is described which comprises a dielectric sphere with a planar cut at the edge and an imbedded light emitting diode (LED). The rays from the LED are either refracted to the forward direction or totally internally reflected by the sphere. The planar surface breaks the total internal reflection and thus sends the rays to the forward direction.
