Vortex Structure Induced by m-fold Symmetric Stress Birefringence

Abstract

Symmetric stress gradients produce intriguing space-variant birefringence patterns in circular windows. When illuminated with circularly polarized light, vortices appear in equally spaced rings. We describe the implementation of these vortices and their use in imaging.
