Efficient light coupling into slow photonic crystal modes mediated by evanescent modes

Abstract

We show that light can be very efficiently coupled into slow photonic crystal modes mediated by evanescent modes and without a transition region. Though evanescent modes don’t carry energy, they affect the interface boundary conditions.
