Low Loss Fusion Splicing Of Silica Microfibers

Abstract

We spliced together two tapered, step-index, air-clad silica microfibers using a CO2 laser with loss < 0.3%. This may be important for realizing practical photonic circuits by eliminating mechanical instabilities related to evanescent coupling.
