High-Order Harmonic Generation on Plasma Mirrors: Toward Attosecond Sources of Second Generation

Abstract

Two mechanisms of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from plasma mirrors have now been clearly identified theoretically and experimentally, and are both associated to trains of attosecond pulses of light. After a general analysis of these mechanisms, we will discuss the properties of the attosecond sources that should be obtained in the near future using plasma mirrors, and explain what information on the laser-plasma interaction dynamics can be extracted from the harmonic radiation properties.
