Abstract
The European AQUA Thermodynamic Experiment (EAQUATE), coordinated with two research aircraft underflying the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on the AQUA satellite, produced a comprehensive set of radiometric and in situ profile data. These data are valuable for investigations into fundamental atmospheric radiative transfer and for validation of temperature and humidity retrievals from hyperspectral sounders. Forward modelling calculations of infrared radiances are described, with deviations between observed and calculated spectra discussed in term of uncertainties in spectroscopic parameters, radiometric calibration and atmospheric profiles
