Abstract

ITT proposes an evolutionary approach to reduce cost and risk to the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) sounder instrument. This approach, the Advanced Sounder for GOES-R (ABX), incorporates the current GOES multispectral sounding bands into the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) architecture with options. Benefits of an evolutionary design include lower technical and program risk and compatibility with the heritage architecture to minimize impact on total system cost across the NOAA enterprise. This architecture improves on heritage temporal and spatial sounding resolution for improved weather forecasting. This presentation describes a conceptual approach for an alternative sounder design and path forward for GOES-R series.
