The Adversarial Relationship between Optical Performance and Scratch-Dig

Abstract

A key cost factor in making an optic is the surface quality (scratch-dig) specification, although in most cases this is for cosmetic purposes only. This paper deals with how an over-emphasis on surface quality can indirectly reduce the “as built” performance of optical systems.
