Slits, curves, chains and rings: how to mix the right ingredients for surface-emitting THz quantum cascade lasers

Abstract

Mechanisms and structures to achieve surface emission in terahertz quantum cascade lasers are discussed. The necessary symmetry breaking is produced in gratings with a base, or curved, or quasiperiodic, and by the finite device length.
