High resolution Fabry-Perot displacement interferometry: a bridge between the meter and the farad

Abstract

A high resolution Fabry-Perot interferometer system is designed to measure displacement. We achieve a fractional uncertainty of δL/L~1.25×10−9 without any optical frequency standard, and resolve hysteresis in a piezoelectric actuator over 7 nm.
