Abstract

This paper describes the concept of direct single-mode-fiber coupled free-space-optical terminals which use bidirectional beacon tracking, diffraction limited signal beam pointing and advanced initial beacon acquisition system to provide robust link operation under adverse weather conditions such as rains, snows and strong atmospheric turbulences. It also discusses the operational condition within 1-km terrestrial horizontal paths and concludes that the scintillation index should be less than 0.1 for a stable and reliable link operation.
