Left-handed Modes and Effective Mode Length in Planar Metal-clad Nanoscale Waveguides

Abstract

By calculating the global power flux and energy density of modes of a planar dielectric waveguide with metal cladding, we show that some modes exhibit left-handed behavior and effective mode lengths below the diffraction limit.
