Abstract

A Tm doped ZBLAN fiber amplifier (1000 ppm by molar, 470 cm) is experimentally demonstrated at 77K. Device gain as high as 22dB was observed near 794 nm, and over 100 mW of amplified signal was observed. The fiber was pumped by a long, high power pulse at 780 nm. Cooling of the fiber to 77K caused an increase in the gain of ~16 dB at 794 nm as compared to that observed at 300K.
