Abstract
The promise of an Er-doped Planar Optical Waveguide Amplifier (POWA) is that it will enable large scale integration of optical components on a common platform, such as silicon optical bench (SiOB), by compensating for passive losses in these components. However, three critical issues needed to be addressed: the coupling problem to standard waveguides and fibers; the propagation losses; and reduction in the area occupied by the amplifier.
