Abstract

With the recent development of high-power pump laser diode at 14xxnm bands, fiber Raman amplifier (RA) became a practical and economic means to meet the ever-increasing transmission capacity. In addition to its distinctive flexibility in signal bandwidth allocation (gain band determined only by the pump wavelength), the gain bandwidth of RA also can be easily extended with the inclusion of multiple pump sets.1 Seemingly simple in construction, the optimization process for the gain bandwidth management in real WDM system requires extensive efforts with much considerations on many factors—pump interaction, pump depletion, double Rayleigh scattering and polarization dependency. For this reason there have been much efforts to establish fancy optimization algorithm through numerical modeling,2–3 or with an indirect data sets such as fiber loss profile.4 Still, the number of required fiber parameters for precise numerical modeling, in fact, is too large to deal with. Furthermore, it is practically impossible to access the real fiber parameters from the installed transmission lines.
