Abstract

Recently, LiNbO3 quasi-phase matched (QPM) wavelength converters based on difference frequency generation (DFG) have become more and more attractive due to their excellent characteristics.1 However, due to the restriction of the QPM condition,2 real variable-in variable-out conversions required in OXC networks have not been realized using the QPM wavelength converters. Quite recently, we have reported successful fabrication of 1.55-µm-band 5 mol% MgO doped LiNbO3 based QPM wavelength converters and demonstration of the cascaded χ(2) based wavelength conversions.3 Compared to congruent LiNbO3, MgO doped LiNbO3 has several orders of magnitude higher resistance to photorefractive damage (PRD) caused by the strong pump power,4 while maintains the advantages of LiNbO3.5 As a result, wavelength converters based on MgO:LiNbO3 can be operated at room temperature without the necessary of heating the device to high temperature (over 100°C).
