Abstract

The polarization dependence of optical components of D-WDM systems becomes serious with increasing transmission capacity. When parts such as fiber, fiber amplifiers, arrayed waveguide gratings, etc., have polarization-dependent loss and/or gain, the traffic quality becomes very degraded. Consequently, the polarization dependence of the components must be evaluated accurately and reduced. Polarization dependence is evaluated using a stable light source with a polarization controller and an optical power meter.
