Abstract

The combination of a passive optical network (PON) based broadcast channel facility with the more privacy and user dedicated WDM channel provision is an attractive solution for net designers.1 It allows for adding additional features to the network and to upgrade an existing passive optical network (PON).2 For this purpose AWG-based devices were developed recently which provide the functions needed for demultiplexing and overlaying in an integrated form on a compact planar chip. The devices demonstrated were restricted to 2 bands.3–4 One band carries the broadcast signal, and the other band accomo-dates the WDM downstream channels.
