Abstract

A vibrational mode of OH radical in silica optical fibers causes extrinsic absorption centered at around 1370 nm. We presume that optical communications utilizing the ‘OH-band’ have not been unveiled so far mainly due to the additional absorption loss in the conventional single-mode silica fibers. Recently, however, mass production of perfectly OH-free silica fibers as an optical transmission medium became possible via elaboration of the relevant processing facilities.1
