Inhibiting Pattern-Effects in Semiconductor Optical Amplifier using Carrier Reservoir in an Asymmetrical Multiple Quantum Well Structure

Abstract

We propose an asymmetric quantum well semiconductor optical amplifier in which the wider bandgap quantum wells act as carrier-reservoirs replenishing carriers in narrower quantum wells of the active region. 10Gbps pattern-effect free gain was demonstrated.
