Abstract
Surface imperfection specifications (i.e. Scratch-Dig) are the most misunderstood, misinterpreted, and ambiguous of all optics component specifications. Nevertheless, there are tools available that allow an objective measurement of surface quality, either to a dimensional type of specification, such as ISO 10110-7, or to a visibility specification, such as the American National standard, ANSI/OEOSC OP1.002 or its progenitor, MIL-PRF-13830B. This talk will consider the technologies available for objective measurement of both size and brightness of scratches and digs.
