Abstract
Dispersive optical interference coatings (dubbed “chirped mirrors” - CMs) are key-components in femtosecond pulse generation. Beyond a dramatic reduction of the computer optimization time, the development of quasi-analytical CM-design techniques has allowed tailoring their properties to precisely meet diverse application requirements. Yet, cutting-edge scientific applications call for CMs having even larger bandwidth (ideally extending over more than one optical octave in the visible and near infrared), while industrial applications require reducing the inherently high sensitivity of the design-performance to manufacturing errors. Both these needs are answered by tilted- front-interface (TFI) CMs, a novel implementation providing ideal impedance-matching to the incident medium over an unlimited bandwidth.
