Abstract
Random roughness of an optical surface reduces its specular reflectance and transmittance by scattering light. This reduction can be modeled using an absorbing layer on the surface. If a Drude effective-medium approximation is used for the layer index, the layer with a thickness twice the RMS roughness of the surface correctly models the scattered light.
