Abstract

A novel technique is described for producing electro-optical intensity modulator, which has transmitted periodical continuous time domain waveform only by sine or cosine wave applied-voltage. And the main principle is synthesis of electro-optic effect in time domain and the interference of polarized light. The technique is based on the algorithm comparing of Fourier series and positive-direction searching, which can not only simplifies the calculation process but also produces many choices of structural parameters. The presented modulator here consists of a series of stages between input and output polarizer, with each stage consisting an electro-optic element. And every element has the same applied-voltage function, the same or different thickness but different azimuth angle. A three stages synthesis of electro-optic modulators for triangle continuously transmitted waveform is performed for proving this technique.
