Optical spectroscopy and control of single defect centers in solids

Abstract

The nitrogen-vacancy defect center in diamond is characterized by a weak coupling to the environment plus a electron spin paramagnetic ground and optically excited state. One thus can manipulate and read single spin states in these defect centers. Another type of defect can be ionized in a controlled way which may provide a means for future high density data storage on a single defect center level.
