From “magnetic atoms” to low-loss negative-index metamaterials at telecommunication wavelengths

Abstract

We present metamaterials consisting of a combination of cut-wire pairs as “magnetic atoms” and a diluted metal. Our experiments reveal a negative refractive index at 1.4 µm wavelength, with a transmittance exceeding 50%.
