Optical Amplification of Propagating Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Abstract

We demonstrate amplified spontaneous emission of long-range surface plasmon polaritons in planar metallic waveguides embedded in a fluorescent polymer. A net gain coefficient of 8±2 /cm has been realized for propagation up to 2 mm.
