While having a greater data acquisition rate, swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) has substantial performance limitations relative to time domain optical coherence tomography (TD-OCT), contrary to statements in the literature. Most significantly are the reduced dynamic range after analog to digital conversion and the low pass nature of noise filtration. In the 3D images shown, a scaffolding appears artificially wide or blurred out for SS-OCT (with high background noise) and structural definition is lost less than 1mm into the sample. Qualitatively, structural detail is seen far deeper and is more sharply defined with TD-OCT. The differences are statistically significant.
