Abstract

A hollow-cathode type discharge cell as generator of uranium ions is investigated. The I 4 9 / 2 0 ground-state ion density has been obtained by absorption spectroscopy at 5493 and 4244 Å. The absorption measurements have been performed using two identical hollow-cathode lamps: one acting as a light source, the other as a reservoir of free ions. Neon and xenon have been used as discharge sustaining gases. In our experimental conditions the measured ion ground-state density is of the order of 1012 ions cm−3. Absorption measurements performed at 5915 and 4246 Å of U i give a density of the order of 1012 atoms cm−3. This latter value is in excellent agreement with a previously measured value obtained by laser-absorption spectroscopy.
