Abstract
The publication in 1989 of the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary is not a narrow literary event. This short article, reprinted by permission from New Scientist of 29 July 1989, shows that, in its content as well as its production, the dictionary demonstrates how important a part of our culture science has become.
