Limitations à la Qualité des Images d’un Grand Télescope

Abstract

It is possible to construct a telescope achieving about two meters of aperture and still capable of yielding an essentially normal Airy disk. Atmospheric turbulence can spread out this image to where the central maximum of the diffraction pattern can easily be ten times larger. Nevertheless the photographie resolution of a large telescope is always better than that of a smaller instrument if the exposure time is not too short. The characteristics of the two-meter Haute Provence telescope are described.
