Abstract
Indirect studies in the structure of coal and related carbonaceous materials are made through spectral studies of chars of model compounds. Temperature effects are demonstrated; the higher the temperature, or the longer the pyrolysis time, the higher the rank of coal that the char spectrum resembles. Charring of model compounds with and without oxygen present permits the assignment of some infrared bands of chars to oxygenated structures. Chars prepared from isotope-labeled compounds also permit the assignment of spectral bands through observation of isotopic shifts.
