Abstract
Spectroscopic examination of electrodeless gaseous discharges in krypton containing small amounts of xenon or mercury shows a directed transfer of energy by collisions of the second kind from the krypton 1s5 metastable atoms to the 2s levels in Xe and the 91P1 state in Hg. In a Kr–Hg discharge a population inversion was achieved which yields a theoretical amplification coefficient of 6.3 × 10−5 cm−1 for infrared radiation at λ = 1.7987 μ. The validity of this conclusion rests upon the accuracy of a Bates–Damgaard calculation of the f-values for transitions in mercury atoms.
