Abstract
The focusing effect of a dielectric circular cylinder in a uniform, three-dimensional light field is studied The cylinder consists of an absorbing core surrounded by a coaxial, nonabsorbing sheath. The dielectric constants of the core and the sheath are the same. An expression for the energy density (or the light intensity) in the core is obtained. The study was motivated by the problem of pumping a composite rod optical maser.
