Abstract

When a polychromatic light beam is deflected by an acoustooptic cell, its colored components are spatially separated. This dispersion can be compensated for by an optical system acting on the diffracted light beams. A general mathematical treatment is developed when only two different colors are involved. The conditions for no degradation by spherical aberrations as well as chromatic ones are also emphasized. When applied to the two strong blue and green wavelengths of an argon laser, this leads to the design of a practical achromatic acoustooptic deflector device. Experimental results are also reported.
