Dispersion effects in relief holograms immersed in near index matched liquids or Christiansen revisited

Abstract

One century ago the Danish physicist C. Christiansen described some experiments in which he index matched various powders in mixtures of two liquids. He observed that a perfect match was only possible for one wavelength at a time due to the difference in the dependence of the refractive index on wavelength between the powder and liquid. In the experiments reported here, the powder has been replaced by a relief hologram. When immersed in liquid mixtures this diffraction grating can be made inoperative at a narrow band of wavelengths and tunable by varying the composition of the liquid mixture and/or changing an external parameter such as the temperature.
