Abstract

The contrast of interference fringes generated in the Ronchi test using an extended light source is discussed using the approach of multiple incoherent superimposition of the self-imaging phenomenon. It is found that the main factor determining fringe visibility is related to the grating self-imaging phenomenon and the multiple superimposition effect is of secondary importance. Experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical findings.
