Data structure of the compact disk–read-only memory system

Abstract

The compact disk–read-only memory (CD–ROM) system, based on the digital audio compact disk system, is designed as a data storage system for computers by Sony and Philips. This paper outlines the CD–ROM system and describes the data structure (user data, 2K bytes), especially a new error correction system. The performance of this new correction system is good enough to store digital data in the CD–ROM. Two hundred disks in actual use were checked and no uncorrectable error data were found. In addition, this paper summarizes production of CD–ROM disks.
