Temperature Dependence of the Solar Absorptance and Thermal Emittance of Copper, Gold, Nickel, and Silver

Abstract

Measurements have been made of the absorptance and thermal emittance of gold, copper, silver, and nickel, in the temperature range from 200°K to 400°K, under conditions simulating outer space. Over this temperature range the rate of change of temperature, as a function of σT4, is not linear in either the heating cycle or the cooling cycle. The experimental data were fitted to a cubic equation by a least-squares technique. The standard heat balance equation was then used to calculate absorptance, emittance, and their ratios.
