Abstract
An elaborate study of twenty-eight scientific controversies found that a high percentage of later-born scientists supported theories challenging accepted beliefs. This report, reprinted by permission from the Science Section of The New York Times of 8 May 1990, suggests that scientists who are not first-borns may be less likely to identify with authority.
