Determination of effective optical constants of infrared CO2 waveguide laser materials

Abstract

We report a simple method for the determination of optical constants in the λ = 10-μm region. The method is based on the measurement of reflectance over a wide range of angles of incidence by using a CO2 laser as the source. Effective values of the refractive index and extinction coefficient at different CO2 laser emission wavelengths are determined for alumina, fused silica, and beryllia, materials that are widely used for CO2 waveguide lasers and for CO2 laser beam transmission.
