Lens Response to Extended Sources

Abstract

A numerical calculation of the frequency response function of a lens used to fourier transform an extended source has been made for source illumination with a gaussian profile. The response is found to be a function of both the variance (or width) of the gaussian, as well as the ratio of the lens and input diameters. Calculations for a range of values of variance and lens input diameter have been compared with experimental measurements of the response of a white spatial frequency noise source. These calculations provide a guide for the design and evaluation of optical fourier transform systems.
