Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Submission Deadline: 1 October 2009

The Second North American Symposium on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (NASLIBS) will be held 13-15 July 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana. NASLIBS 2009 will be dedicated to capture the rapid developments in the science and particularly in the applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A unique feature of this technique is the potential to make remote, real-time determination of the chemical composition of any sample, whatever its nature or physical state, both at close contact as well as at standoff ranges in excess of 100 m.

The NASLIBS is organized to bring together experts and young researchers in the field, specialists from analytical laboratories, and engineers from the industry concerned with applications and instrumental development to examine recent progress and to define the needs of LIBS. The central theme of NASLIBS 2009, "LIBS: from the Lab to Dual-Use Applications," aims at emphasizing the contribution of fundamental knowledge to the analytical and instrumental control and usefulness of LIBS. We plan to publish both original invited and contributed papers presented at NASLIBS 2009 in a feature issue of the Applied Optics Lasers, Photonics, and Environmental Optics Division. We will also solicit the original manuscripts in LIBS research of fundamentals, instrumentation, and applications.

This feature issue highlights the topics of the 2009 North American Symposium on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy but not limited to the following:

  • Security and forensic
  • Fundamentals
  • Instrumentation/commercialization
  • Biomedical and environmental
  • Fusion with LIBS
  • New frontiers
  • Industrial
  • Liquid analysis

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual standards for submission to Applied Optics; see the Information for Contributors in any printed issue or the OSA Style Guide: http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ao/submit/style/jrnls_style.cfm. Manuscripts must also be uploaded through OSA's electronic submission system: http://www.opticsinfobase.org/ao/journal/ao/author.cfm. All submissions must be submitted to the Lasers, Photonics, and Environmental Optics Division. Please specify that the manuscript is for the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy feature (choose from the feature issue drop-down menu).
