Abstract

Slow light engineering of slotted photonic crystal waveguides is realized by combining the benefits of both elliptical holes and optofluidic infiltration. By adjusting the refractive indices of optofluidics infiltrated in the first and second rows of elliptical holes adjacent to the slot, slow light can be improved to possess a high group index and wide bandwidth at the same time. Considering a criterion of restricting the group index variation within a ±10% range as a flat region, the corresponding bandwidths of the flat band can reach 17.92, 7.2, 3.65, and 1.8 nm around 1550 nm when the group indices are kept at constants of approximately 32, 57, 110, and 2.5, respectively. In addition, the capability of engineering slow light properties after fabrication is of interest for compensating fabrication errors.
